I DID THE HARD MODE!!! It seemed unfairly hard, but i actually did it! It is all about learning patterns and mechanics, and reflecting over what just happend helps too. I love the style, I love the soundtrack and I love a good challenge!
Congrats! You are one of very few to have defeated hard mode! A bunch of playtesters compared hard mode to a real-time puzzle game, and I think that gets at what you were saying about learning and reflecting on patterns.
At any rate, thank you for the lovely comment and thank you for playing!
This was such an excellent game! The mechanics and design made it hard but not unfair, and the sprites were so incredibly expressive!! I loved the movement and energy so much.
What a smooth fella! I loved how their moves synced to the music, and the whole mirror theme has been so well executed! Definitely got to try to beat it perfectly some day!
Aww I love seeing all these vidoes!! Not only is it great to see the game I made get played a bunch, it's also a really rich way for me to learn how people play the game. Even after playtesting by looking over peoples' shoulders for hours and hours, I still feel like I'm learning a lot from these videos.
I am a fat $6 richer thanks to some lovely lovely supporters!
But to clarify, I made a point of not charging any money for this game. I'll probably try monetizing some future game I create, but I wanted this one to be accessible to all y'all good peeps.
Of course! This game was released under a Creative Commons license, so you can absolutely use this music for non-commercial purposes provided you give proper attribution.
This was a really quick and fun game! It should take anyone around 10-15 minutes to beat. But there is replayability with hard mode and just trying to get an overall better score. I made a video of my experience. (Play the game yourself before watching!) Keep up the great work!
I think there's a lot of design space that can be explored with this set of mechanics, and another boss could totally be feasible (in a separate cart, since this one maxed out the PICO-8's capabilities). But I'm probably not going to be the one to do that. I have every intention of making more boss fights (I think boss fights are a beautiful game design challenge) but they won't use this set of base mechanics or be in this "world".
I love this game! The art and animations where amazing and the music was pefect for this! The game (gameplay wise) had a slow start but then sped up till the mirror part which i couldn't beat!
This was great, I haven't finished it because my sick mind is too fogged up on cold medicine right now, but as soon as I get better I'm finishing this! As soon as I got to the double, where you have the two characters to control but their mirrored to each other, that's where I had the most trouble, and I very soon died. This was excellent! so much fun! I got a lot of laughs out of the magician boss! All in all this was spectacular! I love the music I found my self moving my head to the rhythm of the song and immediately liking it from first listen! You've got a gem here, I hope you know that!
Absolutely fantastic. The influence is clear, yet different in enough regards to feel completely unique in its own right. I'd be the first in line to buy this game if it was made into a larger project. You've got something special here, and you should keep going. One of the most fun games I've played this year by a long shot.
Thanks! It took me three months from very beginning to very end, which included all of the game design / asset creation / programming as well as spending two weeks learning enough music theory to be able to write music.
I'm always surprised at the quality of games that come out of Pico-8. Unfortunately, because of its limitations, the games won't ever be more than a microgame. For what it is though, it's fantastic, and I could see it as being a high quality demo from another, larger game.
I basically fumbled and lost immediately as soon as he splits you in two
Every little detail of this game has been paid attention to. The juiciness of tile collecting, the little smears when my blob moves around the field. And the adorable introduction of the boss! Plus, the game's challenge is fun and fair. If this developer ever makes a game with a collection of bosses like this, they can count on a download from me!
Wow, this is one boss I liked (and grew to not like :p); he's fun to watch, but fighting against him? I pity the poor soul who has to endure it, because it was one method of attack after another, and with significant variations too XD
I liked how the music has a catchy theme, the pixel art was done very nicely, the boss's animations were very charming, and the inclusion of both player clones and boss clones made the last 2 stages very intense :o
Absolutely brilliant game! Enjoyed the game mechanics and never knew what crazy new idea would get thrown into the mix next. Boss attacks were very well telegraphed and never felt unfair, and I loved how all the actions were in sync with the music. Pixel art and audio were spot on too :)

The music, themovement, and the character design are all so great.

Tons of fun. Good work!
This guy totally Sigma-ed me like 8 times. And Hard Mode doesn't count when I beat it originally so yeah, I'm awesome. Good game.
How much did you get in support dollars?
I am a fat $6 richer thanks to some lovely lovely supporters!

cooooll
Hi! I love your game! It's awesome, simple, and neat. However, could I use this music in my game? Or do you have any other music that I could use?
Thanks so much!
Of course! This game was released under a Creative Commons license, so you can absolutely use this music for non-commercial purposes provided you give proper attribution.

I don't have any other music, however. This is in fact the first game I've ever composed music for.
Thanks so much! I'll be using it for the Heart Jam :)
Also, is their a link to just get the music, nothing else?

I believe in you: https://www.speedrun.com/Just_One_Boss
This is an awesome little game! Are you or could you make another one with different mechanics?
I think there's a lot of design space that can be explored with this set of mechanics, and another boss could totally be feasible (in a separate cart, since this one maxed out the PICO-8's capabilities). Is there any way to get the song for this? I played it a while ago and I can't get the song out of my head!
You could always play my other game, Juggle Panic: https://bridgs.itch.io/juggle-panic
Cuz lemme tell you, after showcasing that game for four hours, that music will plague your immortal soul for eternity.
Oh gOd now that song is stuck in my head, what have you done to me, oh no

Great game! Fantastic art, good mechanics, short, sweet, and to the point! I'm curious, how long did it take to make this game?
Thanks! It took me three months from very beginning to very end, which included all of the game design / asset creation / programming as well as spending two weeks learning enough music theory to be able to write music.
You got me to love and hate that boss very quickly. Well done. 👏👏👏👏
Charming little game. Very satisfying.
It was easy until I got a double... And then I died immediately.
Sure, it's just one boss... but it's hard!
what you used to creat? the engine and the language
Im pretty sure they used PICO-8
ok thx
Yup! This is a PICO-8 game, which is a lovely platform for making small games full of pixely goodness.
Such a polished game. I felt the pacing was fair. The magician-themed attacks were creative and fun. Thanks for making it!

wow. So much charm packed into just one boss.

This game is amazing! The music, the charm, the mechanics. Great job!!
Wow, that one wonderful!

Good job here, mate! :D
I think this game can by once of my favorite game on PICO-8!
